If you don’t have access to any of these phone numbers, call 911.

Where can I take an injured bird?

The bird is either sick or injured and must be taken right away to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Important: For the bird to have the best chance of recovery and release, you must contact a rehabilitator right away and transport the songbird there immediately. Don’t ever try to care for the bird yourself.

Wildlife rehabilitators aid in the care and recuperation of injured or sick wild animals. All wildlife rehabilitators are licensed by the DEC. If you find a wild animal in need of assistance, a contact list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators is offered here for your convenience.

Do not attempt to treat or raise a wild animal yourself its illegal. Wildlife species differ widely in terms of their capture, care and handling requirements. If you are not properly trained, you could make an animals situation worse or kill it. If kept improperly, animals may lose their natural fear of humans and become more vulnerable to predation or injury. Euthanasia is often the only option for wild animals that become habituated to humans.

You may be able to find a veterinary clinic willing to give immediate care, but many veterinarians are not comfortable treating wildlife.
