Are silkies good beginner chickens?

If you’re looking for a friendly, chatty, sweet-natured breed as a first chicken for your children or a companion for yourself, you may just have found your ideal. Silkie chickens are exactly as they look – funny, cuddly and very kind. But they’re not suitable for every kind of climate.

Of all the ornamental chicken breeds, the Silkie Bantam is the most popular and most loved. Can’t you tell why? They’re the lap dog of the chicken world, complete with hair-like plumage and an incredibly sweet temperament. Silkies were originally bred in China, where they are still kept (and eaten) today. They have black skin and bones and 5 toes instead of the normal 4. In addition, Silkie hens make wonderful mothers and are even known to adopt baby ducks if given the chance! You will get a mix of bearded and non-bearded varieties with your Silkie order. And, according to a recent poll we conducted, Silkies are a favorite choice

Lilliebeth is just loving all her new achievements, such as following me around the house and jumping on top of things so that she can fly out of her indoor pin. However she has some attachment issues right now she tweets to the top of her lungs when she can’t see me lol she’s still the best

Unfortunately, the bad reviews I read about, I tried to give them the benefit of a doubt, actually are a thing they need to be concerned about. Thank you for great assortment and loads of adorable fun!

FLF gave us a credit for the one and we will order more when we expand our coop and run. The post office called me early on Saturday to pick them up, so Im glad I was home. Feather Lover Farms went above and beyond by adding a fourth Silkie, but unfortunately two of the four were dead upon arrival.

I also love the fact that all four were different colors, so they took the time to give me a variety. Overall, I have found the ordering process, shipment, quality control and attention to detail of Feather Lover Farms to be wonderful, and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone. We are overjoyed & cant wait to watch them develop into beautiful, quirky, lovable fluffballs!

Ive waited a month to get my chicks and both of the silkies I ordered came with broken legs. You can really tell they put a lot of care into each customer because each of the silkies are a different color! It took a while since I made my order to receive the silkie chicks (almost a month) but I couldnt be any more happier!

I have raised chickens for nearly 5 years now, and these babies are the most active, social and confident chicks Ive ever had. They dont seem to fear us, dont mind being held, eat well, love to investigate new items, and seem to enjoy burrowing with their heads down into any little space they can find just to check it out..and theyre only days old! Little gold puffball arrived in one day, active and ready to explore.

Healthy, happy chicks 😉 our first time ordering and we will be a return customer ! Shipping on my birds was delayed because of issues with the postal service, so my birds were a little older than expected, but they shipped packed with food and water to get them safely through the journey. I ordered 4 but they sent a little extra (total 7) but unfortunately one didnt make alive.

I live in Hawaii and a special permit is required to ship these babies over. I just wish that it couldve been included in the total payment when I payed initially or informed about it through their website. Our babies arrived well packaged in their cozy little next still warm!

This is a great company, they placed extra heat packs so even with the delay, they didn’t suffer. I’ll try to include some pictures, but I can tell these guys are gonna be some seriously incredible fluff balls! More than anything I really appreciate how Feather Lovers takes care of their babies and communicates quickly and respectfully with their customers.

With the quarantine we were able to order a small number for my Zoology II class. These were an early Christmas gift for my daughter and she absolutely loves them and couldnt be happier. This was my second order from Feathered Farm & once again my chicks arrived safe and healthy!

These little ones arrived nestled safely in their box with a straw nest and food and water. We had an issue with our initial order and they were responsive and kind in helping remedy the situation! They where very good to deal with they take care of there customers chicks where delivered in great shape will definitely buy from them again thank you

I live in an area where roosters are not allowed so I had to get rid of them, and now my poor only girl chicken is barley eating from depression. They took longer than the selected ship month so we got a mystery chic as well. Bad customer service, over priced, and apparently not good genetic quality.

Ordered 3 Silkies, received 3 plus a bonus chick, not sure the breed, but still cute. Unfortunately, one Silkie didn’t make it, despite the fact that they were only end route for 15 hours, since I live so close to Rocklin. We order 3 silk chic, I received 4 very healthy chicks.Yes Im very happy thank you

They Quickly respond in live chat and very helpful with all the questions I had. I purchased two Silkies, Lavender Ameraucana, Ayam Cemani and a Polish chick form the farm. I waited three months to post my review just to make sure everything is good with my birds.

Im the first time chicken owner and Im very glad I used the Feather Liver Farm to purchase my birds. All 6 Silkie Chicks showed up alive and well and we couldnt be happier with our experience using Feather Lover Farms! I was excited to receive my first ever online order of day old chicks and my first silkies.

After Nearly three months of waiting, 3 Black Silkie chicks finally arrived today. After settling into a bigger enclosure with food, water, and a heat lamp they seem better. It was a surprise for my chicken loving youngest daughter and she was ecstatic when they arrived!

we got 4 chickens they were all fine for 2 days but one died just now and we think about her one might also 🙁 the other two are good tho. There was a cold front that came in about the same time which may have contributed to not all the chicks making it to Texas with the first shipment. I ordered 5 silkies in late April, May 7th I received a shipping confirmation – May 8th our local Post Office called me early that morning to come and pick up the little babes!

One had pasty butt for one day but after we got her cleaned up and they we able to relax from the stress of travel everyone was perfectly fine! Our chicks shipped out in the late afternoon and arrived the next morning happy and healthy. Purchased 4 they sent 5 (Im guessing in case one didnt survive the trip).

Got an email notification that they were shipping Wednesday and got a call from my post office they were here on Friday. I was a little nervous to have them sent from California to Florida but they arrived perfectly packaged! I called their phone number and left a voicemail asking about my order.

The day after I left the voicemail I received confirmation that chicks were being shipped. I would give 5 stars, however, I did wait a month with no word, then a delivery with only 2 of the 3 alive. They were mailed out on a Thursday from California, we received them in NC the next early afternoon!

This was my first time purchasing chicks online and it was the best experience I couldve asked for. This farm responded quickly to my concerned emails and they sent me two bonus chicks with my order. I would highly recommend this farm and I will be purchasing chicks from them in the future!

Unfortunately one passed away on the trip getting his head stuck, but all the rest were alive and super happy. We love Feather Lover Farms, this was our second time ordering baby silkies as usual they came in healthy and alive. One was a little sleepy at first but theyve adapted well and my daughter is in love!

Unfortunately deaths happen with young chicks but the lack of response was gross.

Silkie chickens get their name from their trademark fluffy plumage that feels just like silk to the touch. Their soft, beautiful feathers make this breed a popular choice both as a pet and for exhibition.

Available from JM Hatchery

Silkie chickens are an old breed, reputed to go back to as far as 206 BC in China. They became part of the American Poultry Association standard in 1874. All Silkies are considered “bantam Silkies” in the U.S. and Canada, while every other country recognizes them as Bantam and large fowl types.Silkies are easily recognized by their soft, fur-like feathers that are fluffy in texture. Their feathers are not waterproof and can look pretty comical when wet. It’s best to towel-dry or blow-dry their feathers if they get extremely wet. Silkies can’t fly because of their feather structure. Their colors range from blue, black, white, gray, buff, splash, and partridge. Unlike most chickens that have four toes, Silkie chickens have five, and they are black vs. yellow.

Weight

Silkies reach only 8-14 inches tall. Males can weigh up to 4 pounds, with females tipping in at three pounds. The American Standard for Perfection calls for males at 36 ounces with females at 32 ounces.

Good For

Silkie chickens are often raised as show birds. Hens are excellent mothers and can be used to hatch the eggs of other chicken breeds.

Temperament

Their calm, friendly, and gentle temperament make them a great pet. That calm temperament can make them a target, however, for more aggressive chicken breeds.

Egg Production

Silkies aren’t known for their egg production and typically lay less than 120 in a year. That amounts to about three a week, but they do start laying earlier in the year than other hen species. The Silkie eggs are cream-colored and small- to medium-sized.

Time to Maturity

Chicks from Bantam Silkie hatcheries mature reasonably fast. Pullets mature at 8-10 months, while cockerels take a bit longer at 10-12 months. Feathers set at three months and then molt at six to eight months. Silkie chickens will live between 7-9 years, though the care they’re given may extend that life span.

Can you eat a silkie chicken?

Silkie chickens can certainly be eatenjust don’t expect a big meal from them. There’s little meat to be gained, maybe a pound when dressed. That said, Silkie chicken meat is rich and delicate.

Do silkie chickens make good house pets?

In a word, Silkie chickens are adorable. Their lightweight and small-size, coupled with the fact that they like to be handled, makes them a great pet for children, especially if you elect to show them.
