Dutch Shepherd for Sale?

This is a question that more than 6255 of our readers have been asking us! Luckily, we have found the most appropriate information for you!

The Dutch Shepherd resembles the Belgian Shepherd Dog in coat type and physical characteristics, sans color. His original herding abilities still intact, the Dutch Shepherd is lively, energetic and active with plenty of stamina, reflected in his physical appearance: his body is medium-sized, powerful and well-muscled and is slightly longer than tall.

A breed native to the Netherlands and dating back to 1898, the Dutch Shepherd was originally used as a sheepdog and all-purpose farm dog. Versatile and multifunctional, the Dutch Shepherd also is used as a companion and guard dog. By 1900, industrialization overtook flocks of sheep, and also consequently the shepherd dogs that herded the sheep, were largely replaced by industrialization and the repossession of land for alternate uses. Hence, the Dutch Shepherd was used for other tasks, such as police and military work. Regardless, he retained his natural herding ability to this day and is still often used for this purpose. The United Kennel Club welcomed the Dutch Shepherd into its Herding Group in 1995. Intelligent, independent and determined, the Dutch Shepherd can have a mind of his own, but nonetheless is devoted, eager to please and obedient toward his owner. He is loyal and steadfast, serving as a vigilant watchdog. All shed seasonally and thus require weekly brushing on average. Regular teeth brushing, ear cleaning and nail trimming, as well as the occasional bath, also are a must. The Dutch Shepherd thrives on having a job to do but is capable of turning the on-off switch for work, play and relaxation. He should be given plenty of mental and physical stimulation, and is an excellent fit for an active household with other dogs. Obedience training is recommended for the intelligent, independent Dutch Shepherd; without it, he may become high strung. How much does a Dutch Shepherd cost?

The average price of Dutch Shepherd puppies is $1000 to $2000. However, top dogs bred as show dogs or to propagate their pedigree lines can be as expensive as $3500. If you choose to adopt an abandoned Dutch Shepherd from a shelter you will pay a lot less, even for a purebred dog. The price is on average $300.

Is a Dutch Shepherd a good pet?

Dutch Shepherds make excellent family dogs that are great with kids and other pets, though they need an active environment that will keep them mentally and physically stimulated, or they may get bored and destructive. … Early socialization will help them keep calm around new pets and people.

How rare are Dutch shepherds?

Once nearly driven to extinction, the Dutch shepherd is a rare breed of dog from the Netherlands. At first glance, the Dutch shepherd is easy to confuse with its German cousin, but there are distinct differences between the two breeds, both physically and in temperament.

Do Dutch shepherds ever calm down?

I have known Dutch Shepherds that are able to settle down in the house during the day (but are always ready for a game of tug or fetch, or to go for a walk in all kinds of weathers). They are described as a “Malinois with an off switch” but are still, in general, more active than your average German Shepherd.

“One of the reasons that it’s easy for me to defend and admire the Dutch Shepherd is that in some ways, based on written history of the German Shepherd Dog, the Dutch Shepherd is, essentially, what the German Shepherd could have been.” Cheryl Carlson, President of the Dutch Shepherd Dog Club of America

Our Dutch Shepherds Earn their STRIPES! The Dutch Shepherd is a medium sized dog, (22’-25” tall weighing 55-75 pounds), highly intelligent and loyal with strong protective instincts who excels as a guard dog. They make good family dogs as they are playful, affectionate, and active.Although it will equally consider each family member its own, Dutch Shepherds are often “one person” dogs, being the most loyal to just one person. Although their body style is similar to many other herding breeds, their coat coloring is uniquely brindle; with various shades including gray, yellow, silver, red or gold brindle, and blue. This brindle pattern sometimes gives the coat an impression of stripes, reminiscent of a tiger! In searching for a Dutch Shepherd, you will find a variety of breeders, most of whom are breeding strictly for performance. Thus, the dogs that they produce, while “striped” on the outside, are much more like a Malinois on the inside! Another faction is currently seeking AKC sanctioning of the Dutch Shepherd breed, claiming only their “pure” bred FCI registered dogs are Dutch Shepherds. We have chosen to utilize only the best, purebred registered Dutch Shepherds in our breeding program.I feel that the Dutch Shepherd should be a good, medium between the high intensity of the Malinois, and the strong work ethic of a German Shepherd. The typical Dutch Shepherd should work all day, and then snuggle with you on the couch that night. These dogs should be able to fit into whatever situation they find themselves in, and will not require a gifted handler. Consider one of our Dutch Shepherds if you have enjoyed a German Shepherd in the past, like what you hear about Malinois but are concerned about their “neediness”, or would like a very versatile pet. A Dutch Shepherd can fulfill as many different spots in your life as they have stripes! Country of Origin The Dutch Shepherd, also known as the Hollandse Herdershond, is very closely related to the Belgian Shepherd and both breeds originated from the same general gene pool of herding dogs that also produced the German Shepherd. The Dutch Shepherd, like it’s other counterparts, is a jack of all trades. The breed was and still is utilized as a farm guard, herder, cart-puller, guard, police and security dog. While the Dutch Shepherd has a wide range of talents, they are a relatively rare and unknown breed. Even in the Netherlands numbers are low and the Dutch Shepherd’s wire haired variety’s numbers are dangerously low. Separate divisions of the Dutch Shepherd based on coat texture came about when dog shows began 100 years ago.

The long-haired variety exhibits long and straight hair that lays flat against the body and feels harsh to the touch. The Dutch Shepherd may exhibit heavy white markings on the chest and feet, which is undesirable for the show ring. The Dutch Shepherd is regarded highly in activities such as catch, agility, guard work, field trailing, obedience competition and companionship. Upkeep

The Dutch Shepherd’s brindle coat can be one of three types: short-hair, long-hair or rough-hair.
